Hadiths: Words of the Prophet (PBUH) that Shape Our Faith

The Hadiths are the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that guide Muslims in how to live their daily lives. While the Quran is the holy book of Islam, these sayings help us understand the teachings of Islam more deeply. They are like a map that shows us the path how to follow the Sunnah, the traditions of the Prophet (PBUH).

After the Prophet (PBUH) passed away, Islamic scholars who were also known as Muhaddiths, carefully collected these Hadiths. They made sure the words came from the people who heard them from the Messenger of Allah (SAW).

Muslims use the Hadiths to learn about things like how to pray, how to be kind to others, and how to live a life pleasing to Allah (SWT). In this blog, we’ll discuss in detail about the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). How these saying became an important part of our faith, helping us to understand the Holy Quran and shape our behavior. Through the sayings, we connect with the Prophet’s (PBUH) wisdom and strengthen our relationship with Allah (SWT).

What are Hadiths?

To understand what Hadith means, we should know about the origin of the word. The word comes from the Arabic root ‘h-d-th’, which means "to happen." Basically, it means "to report" or "to speak about." Through Hadith, the most beloved Prophets of Islam, Muhammad (PBUH) has influenced the lives of many people. One of the main reasons why Hadith is accepted in Islamic law is because the Prophet (PBUH) holds a special status among Muslims around the world.

Hadiths: Sayings of Prophet (PBUH) and Types

While the sayings help us understand how to live according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), they are divided into different types based on their source and authenticity. Understanding these types helps us know how reliable a Hadith is and who passed it down.

According to Authority:

There are Hadiths that refer to a particular authority. We divide these hadiths into four different sections. These are -

  • Qudsi Hadiths are words from Allah (SWT), shared by His Messenger (SAW) with his companions.
  • Marfu Hadiths are those directly heard from the Prophet (PBUH) by his companions.
  • Mauquf Hadiths were commands given by Nabi (PBUH) to his companions, who then passed them on.
  • Maqtu Hadiths cannot be traced back to the Prophet (PBUH) but are based on the words of his companions.

According to Authenticity:

Hadiths are also categorized by their authenticity. These types of Hadiths are also categorized under four parts, like -

  • Sahih Hadiths are the most trustworthy, reported by truthful people.
  • Hasan Hadiths are good but may have been reported by someone who had a weaker memory.
  • Da'if Hadiths are considered weak because of gaps in the chain of narrators.
  • Maudu Hadiths are fabricated and do not match the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH).

When we know about the types of saying, we can better understand and follow these teachings of Islam and utilize them best in our daily lives.

Isnad: The Chain of Transmitting Hadiths

The chain of transmitting the Hadiths also known as Isnad plays a very important in understanding and verifying the sayings. It tells us who passed on the sayings or actions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This chain of people helps ensure that these sayings are reliable and truthful.

The Isnad works like a series of storytellers. Each person in the chain heard the Hadith from the person before them, starting from the companions of the Prophet (PBUH). The scholars who collected the Hadiths would check each person in the chain to make sure they were trustworthy. If everyone in the Isnad is reliable, the Hadith is considered more authentic.

There are different levels of narrators in the chain. The highest level is the companions of the Prophet (PBUH), who directly heard the Hadith from him. After them come the Tabi'un (Successors), who learned from the companions, and then the Tabi' al-Tabi'in (successors of the Successors), who learned from the Tabi'un. The reliability of the Hadith depends on how trustworthy each narrator is in the chain. Scholars look at their character, memory, and how carefully they reported the Hadith.

The Isnad helps protect the truth of the Hadiths by showing us from where they came from. By carefully checking the chain of narrators, scholars ensure that we can trust the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH). This way, we can follow Islam with confidence, knowing the Hadiths are authentic.
